Free-motion Quilting for Beginners Class 1



Free Motion Quilting for Beginners .
The first session covers the basics. Students will work on a sampler with  stippling, looping, and curvy crosshatching, wishbone, ribbon candy, flowers, hearts, etc.

Nancy will offer instruction in basic free motion quilting on a domestic

machine. The skills learned can also be used on sit down quilting machines 

such as the Baby Lock Tiara.

She will provide a kit with helpful tools and supplies that will be used in class and beyond.  

The kit fee of $12 will be paid to the instructor at the begging of the first 

session.   

Participants will learn how to do the following: 

Prepare machine for successful free motion. 
Choose quality threads and needles for success in quilting. 
Choose batting to complement the design. 
Prepare your project batting and backing with spray baste. 
Make sample blocks with various motifs. 
Check and maintain an appropriate tension. 
Form beautiful designs from a five simple shapes and movements. 
Stipple (small, medium, and large). 
Stipple around a motif. 
Loopy meandering and curvy crosshatching and much more

(Optional) Book--The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting by Angela Walters and           Christa Watson 
(Optional) Book--Free-Motion Quilting by Angela Walters 
Sewing machine with free motion foot (or darning foot) 
Sewing extension table that fits your machine 
Supreme Slider sheet 
Quilting gloves 
Standard sewing supplies 
4 practice sandwiches 14" Squares  - Need at least 4 for class and you'll need more for homework. (14”x 14” square pieces of cotton of any color, 4 
pieces for backing in 14” squares and 4 pieces of batting of your choice cut in 
14” squares. )
505 Basting Spray or Quilting Safety Pins or Fusible Batting (ask Yvonne about 
the fusible batting) 
Thread to match the fabric you are using and a contrasting thread 
Pencil or pen for drawing on paper 
Marking pen for fabric 
Sewing Machine/foot pedal/cord/Free Motion Quilting foot
